Legislation to Extend Sales Tax to Newspapers Dies in Colorado

By: E&P Staff Legislation that would have extended Colorado?s state sales tax to copies of newspapers, and would have eliminated the sales tax exemption for newsprint and printer?s ink, died in the Colorado Senate Monday night, Denver Post blogger Tim Hoover reported.

The tax moves originated with state Sen. Bill Cadman, a Republican from Colorado Springs, who cited a Post editorial that supported changes in sales tax exemptions. He said all industries should ?share the pain? of state taxes, Hoover reported.

Extending the sales tax to newspaper copies would bring in $7.3 million annually, Cadman said. The newsprint and printer?s ink exemptions were costing Colorado $3 million a year, the senator said.

Cadman?s amendment was ruled out of by the Democratic majority, Hoover reported.
