By: Shawn Moynihan Len Muscarella, 57, founder of Interactive Media Associates (IMA) in Parsippany, N.J., and a former reporter for the Middletown Times Herald Record and The Record of Hackensack, died June 4 from complications following a heart attack.
A Newburgh, N.Y., native, Muscarella studied English at Boston College and earned master?s degrees at Syracuse and Rutgers universities. He worked as a reporter for the Middletown Times Herald Record and The Record of Hackensack before entering the new-media world in the 1980s. His many contributions to that field included a role in the creation of the Prodigy network, and he co-edited the e-commerce book ?Net Success.?
Most recently, Muscarella managed The EPpy Awards, Editor & Publisher?s annual awards for excellence in online content. He was on hand for this year?s ceremony during the Interactive Media Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans, where he served as emcee.
"Len was a creative entrepreneur who put his clients first and always drove new ideas," said E&P Publisher Charles McKeown. ?We have worked with him for over 10 years with our Eppy Awards, and he was terrific to work with because of his positive attitude. On top of that, he was a generous, caring individual who we will all miss very much.?
In 1985 Muscarella founded Interactive Media Associates, which specializes in the planning, development, and marketing of new media services. Since then, he worked with senior management to develop media businesses in online and interactive television.
Muscarella lived in Morris Township, where he was an active parishioner at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Morristown. An affable, popular member of his community, he served on the board of the Morris Educational Foundation and promoted ?Morristown's Got Talent!,? an annual production that raised funds for local educational projects.
Muscarella is survived by his wife, Sally, and daughters Anne and Nicole.
