Leo Mores, 90, longtime publisher of Harlan (Iowa) Newspapers, died Wednesday. Mores was the fifth editor-publisher of The Harlan Tribune, which began operations in 1879.
Mores decided in high school that he wanted to go into the weekly newspaper business. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1938, he was named advertising manager at the Rockwell City (Iowa) Advocate. Six months later he co-purchased the Harlan Tribune, and in 1945 he purchased a competing paper, the News-Advertiser. He and his wife, Irene, took complete ownership of the papers in 1958.
Under Mores' guidance, the Harlan Newspapers won more than 225 state and national publishing awards. Mores himself won a number of individual awards, including the Iowa Press Association's Master Editor-Publisher Award in 1964 and Iowa State University's J.W. Schwartz Award for distinguished service in the field of journalism.
