By: Joe Strupp David Cay Johnston, author and former New York Times reporter, and Leonard Downie Jr., former executive editor of The Washington Post, won seats on the Investigative Reporters & Editors Board of Directors at the 2009 IRE Conference in Baltimore this weekend.
Four incumbent candidates also were re-elected to the 13-member board. Those include: Lise Olsen of The Houston Chronicle; Cheryl Phillips of The Seattle Times; broadcast journalist Lea Thompson; and Alison Young of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
IRE Board member James Grimaldi said Downie and Young tied for most votes, with 149 each. Young was then elected president of the board. Grimaldi said Downie had been an original IRE board member back in 1975 when the organization first formed.
He also said at least 800 members attended the conference this past weekend.
