Leonard Sykes Jr., 'Milwaukee Journal Sentinel' Reporter, Dies at 53

By: E&P Staff Leonard Sykes Jr., an urban affairs reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, died Sunday, three months after suffering a massive stroke while visiting his father on Father's Day.

An article in the Journal Sentinel said Sykes was very well-connected in Milwaukee among civic and business leaders. The article said he wrote about topics that included "civil rights, poverty, job training for minorities, efforts to fight violence, foster care and charitable programs in Milwaukee. He also wrote numerous stories about the downfall of the Opportunities Industrialization Center of Greater Milwaukee."

"Leonard's commitment to this newspaper was so essential to our mission," Martin Kaiser, senior vice president/editor of the Journal Sentinel was quoted as saying in the piece. "Whether as a reporter, editor or colleague, his contribution to the newsroom, the newspaper and the community cannot be replaced."
