By: E&P Staff Liberty Group Publishing has acquired New West Newspapers. The transaction includes the daily Nebraska City (Neb.) News Press; the non-dailies Syracuse (Neb.) Journal-Democrat, Hamburg (Iowa) Reporter, Ripley (W. Va.) Star-News; two Penny Press shoppers; a weekend publication; and New West?s commercial printing plants in Syracuse and Ravenswood, W. Va.
Terms of the deal, brokered by Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, were not disclosed.
The owners of New West include two former Iowa newspaper executives, Michael G. Gartner and Gary G. Gerlach, and William Welsh.
Gartner is the former president of NBC news and was editor of the Des Moines (Iowa) Register and the Ames (Iowa) Tribune. He is the principle owner of the Iowa Cubs, the Chicago Cubs? AAA affiliate in Des Moines. Gerlach is the former publisher of the Des Moines Register and Ames Tribune. Welsh is currently serving as president of the Association of Free Community Papers.
