LIBERTY GROUP EXPANDS WESTERN ILLINOIS CLUSTER

Liberty Group Publishing Inc. of Northbrook, Ill., has agreed to purchase the Pekin (Ill.) Daily Times from Howard Publications.

The Daily Times, a 14,000-circulation daily, will be added to Liberty's cluster of five dailies and 15 weeklies in western Illinois.

Bill Howard, vice president for newspapers at Howard Publications, said of the sale, "It makes great sense for Pekin to belong to a group that has clustering potential. Howard has no other properties in the Peoria market.

Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a newspaper broker firm based in Santa Fe, N.M., assisted Liberty in the purchase.
