Library Digitizes Local Daily

Posted
By: E&P Staff Archives of The Daily Times in Mamaroneck, N.Y., soon will be accessible and searchable online as a result of the Mamaroneck Public Library's partnership with Penny Imaging Exchange Inc., Bohemia, N.Y., and its resellers to digitize and make available Daily Times content for library patrons.

The newspaper contains historical information from the Mamaroneck and Larchmont area. It is the only place to go for local information on community events, birth announcements, obituaries, etc. that occurred in the mid-20th century. The library seeks funding to continue the preservation project.

Owner of paper copies of the Daily Times from 1936 through 1979, the library is having the 430 volumes, approximately 18 pounds each, digitized and made searchable through optical character recognition. When the process is complete, patrons will be able to search keywords for relevant Daily Times pages.

"Our library receives a request for an article or obituary from the Daily Times nearly every week. People call from all across the country. Having the newspapers professionally digitized and archived is essential to the preservation of local history," Library Director Susan Benton said in a statement, adding that the library hopes to make the information available nationwide.
