By: E&P Staff The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced today that it is honoring Chuck Stone with the Helen Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award.
Stone is the former Philadelphia Daily News/United Media columnist who also worked as a newspaper reporter and editorial writer. In addition, he's the founding president of the National Association of Black Journalists, the former host of PBS-TV's "Black Perspectives on the News," the author of four books, a 1991-2005 faculty member at the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communication, a Tuskegee Airman, and more.
As a Daily News columnist, Stone was so renowned for his fairness that nearly 100 Philadelphia-area criminals and fugitives surrendered to him rather than to the police.
Helen Thomas was the longtime White House correspondent for United Press International who now writes a King Features Syndicate column.
Stone -- who previously won the National Society of Newspaper Columnists' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 -- will be recognized Oct. 6 during a dinner at the 2007 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference in Washington, D.C.
