By: E&P Staff The Financial Times on Thursday appointed Lionel Barber as editor, effective immediately. He replaces Andrew Gowers, who left the paper citing "strategic differences between him and the publisher," according to The Associated Press.
Currently, Barber is the paper's U.S. managing editor; he plans to move to London full time in January 2006.
"Lionel is an outstanding journalist and editor with a passion for business and a global instinct sharpened by his senior roles in the UK, Europe and America," Marjorie Scardino, chief executive of Pearson, owner of the paper, said in a statement. "He has the vision, talent, and experience to lead the FT through its next phase of growth, in print and online."
Barber, 50, joined the paper 20 years ago, having begun his career as a business journalist at The Scotsman and The Sunday Times. His roles at the FT have included Washington correspondent and U.S. editor, Brussels bureau chief, news editor, and editor of the paper's European edition. In 2002 he moved to New York as the FT's U.S. managing editor, responsible for the newspaper's U.S. edition and for all U.S. news on FT.com.
"We have a strong and dedicated team of journalists and I am looking forward to working with them to maintain and strengthen our position as the world's business newspaper," Barber said in a statement.
