As Dorothy once jumped dramatically from the black and white Kansas plains into the brilliant color of Oz, so the state’s Lawrence Journal World followed suit into digital.
If the analogy might make Oz-weary Kansans groan, consider that for a city of 85,000, Lawrence’s daily newspaper shares a key trait with that early black-and-white-into-color film: It was further ahead on the digital front back in 2005 than many of its much larger brethren are today. When The New York Times took heed with a glowing profile in that year, the site was offering digital baseball cards for each of the area’s Little Leaguers, transcripts of local court cases and P.O.V. photos for each of local Memorial Stadium’s 50,000 seats.
