Local Investment Banker Putting Together Bid for Sun-Times Media Group

Posted
By: E&P Staff James Tyree, chairman of the Chicago-based investment bank Mesirow Financial Holdings, confirmed Monday he is assembling a group to bid on bankrupt Sun-Times Media Group.

In comments to Sun-Times business writer David Roeder, Tyree said the parent of the Chicago Sun-Times could be sold within 60 days.

Tyree said it is still very early in any sales process, but that he?s reviewed the books and discussed a bid with Sun-Times Media Group?s interim chairman, Jeremy Halbreich.

Mesirow would not be part of the group bidding for the company, which publishes several dozen dailies and weeklies in the Chicago area. Tyree said he would like to keep the papers together.

Tyree's name had surfaced in the past as a possible buyer, but before the company's bankruptcy he had mainstained the IRS claim was an insurmountable obstacle to a sale. His latest interest was first reported this weekend in the print edition of Crain's Chicago Business.
