By: Staff Reports Awards Go To 'Orange County Register,''Orlando Sentinel'
The winners of the 2001 Gerald Loeb Awards for Distinguished
Business and Financial Journalism were announced this week.
Administered by the Anderson School at UCLA, the awards will be
presented June 25 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Allan Sloan, Wall Street editor for Newsweek, will receive
a lifetime achievement award.
Other winners include:
Large newspaper category: The Orange County
Register for "The Body Brokers," an expose on the sale of
body parts.
Medium newspapers: The Orlando Sentinel for
"Government Inc.," a series about a Florida law that helped
private developers at the expense of homeowners.
Small newspapers: The Riverfront Times of St.
Louis, Mo., for "Porn in the USA," which raised questions about
pornography's ties to mainstream business.
Magazines: The Industry Standard for "AOL's Rough
Riders," a story about the company's negotiation tactics.
Commentary: Floyd Norris of The New York Times for
his investing columns.
Deadline/Beat Writing: Rebecca Smith of The Wall Street
Journal for "Juice Squeeze," early reporting on the energy
crisis.
