By: Jennifer Saba The weekly Long Island (N.Y.) Press announced that its online site is now updated daily.
"It was staying stagnant on the Web site," said Beverly Fortune, publisher of LongIslandPress.com. "So we talked about daily content in order to bring people back to the site every day."
The newly launched site provides features, investigative stories, local news, politics, events, classifieds, and movie and real estate listings in addition to the material that runs in the free weekly paper, like the popular Amy Fisher column. It also includes an "E-News" email option where readers sign up and receive articles on the topics of their choice.
Fortune says the company is thinking about hiring additional staff to support the new site. As of now, four people work exclusively online. The Long Island Press employs about 65 staffers who write for both the print and online editions.
The paper started publishing as a bi-weekly in May 2002 then went weekly in January 2003. The company distributes 160,000 copies with 100,000 of those issues home-delivered to targeted areas. Fortune said the company is not ruling out the chance the paper, which competes with Newsday, could go daily. "I don't know, but it's a possibility," she said.
