By: E&P Staff Sharon Larsen, longtime editorial page editor at The Daily News of Batavia, N.Y. is retiring, according to the paper.

Larsen's retirement will take effect Sept. 1, but she will still continue to write three editorials a week for the Daily News. Larsen has worked the Batavia paper for 32 years, the last 20 as opinion page editor.

A native of Perry, N.Y., Larsen began working at The Daily News in 1977 as a reporter, primarily covering agriculture and community events before moving to the opinion page.

"A big part of my job is to encourage a public dialogue -- 'How are we going to solve problems as a society?'" Larsen told the Daily News. "The editorial isn't meant to be the final word or the law. It's just how we see it at The Daily News. We want to know what you think. Hopefully, the readers will tell us."
