Longtime Central N.Y. Newspaper Editor Ralph Weir Dies

By: Ralph F. Weir, former editor of the Little Falls Evening Times and a veteran of 62 years at the central New York newspaper, died Monday at the age of 93.

Weir began working at The Times in 1930 and retired the day before his 81st birthday after two decades as editor.

He graduated from St. Johnsville High School in 1930 and went to work soon after as a reporter at the newspaper. Colleagues said Weir was a stickler for accuracy who often took his own photographs to accompany his local news coverage.

Gloria Lawrence, a reporter who worked many years for Weir, told The Times that she remembered Weir as "a top-notch editor who was always fair, both to his co-workers and the readers."

He continued to report after his retirement, submitting photos and news stories about the St. Johnsville Senior Saints, a local senior citizens group.

Weir never married and lived his entire life in the same St. Johnsville apartment where he was born. In the obituary he penned for himself, Weir noted that he was survived by no relatives but "many good friends."

The Times was established in 1886 and serves the Herkimer County communities of Little Falls, Dolgeville, St. Johnsville, Oppenheim, Fairfield, Middleville, Salisbury and surrounding townships.
