Longtime Executive Editor of Mississippi Weekly Dies at 85

By: Services were being held Friday for Mildred Dearman, longtime executive editor of The Carthaginian weekly newspaper in Carthage who died Wednesday at the Leake Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit. She was 85.

Dearman had served as executive editor of The Carthaginian until two years ago when she suffered a stroke.

Services were scheduled from the Carthage United Methodist Church with burial in Harris Cemetery.

A native of Carthage, Dearman began her career in journalism, which spanned almost 50 years, as a reporter at The Carthaginian in 1960. She headed up the Mississippi Press Association "Better Newspaper Contest" for a decade. She received the University of Southern Mississippi's Medalist Award in Journalism in 1973.

Survivors include a son, a daughter, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
