(AP) William Bowling "Bo" Byers, a journalist who covered Texas for decades working for The Associated Press and the Houston Chronicle, has died. Byers, 90, died Sunday at a hospital in Austin, said Weed-Corley-Fish North Funeral Home office manager Michelle Besteiro. Besteiro had no information Tuesday on a cause of death. Byers was born April 24, 1920, in Miami, Mo. He arrived in Austin as a child to live with relatives. An obituary provided by the funeral home says Byers graduated from the University of Texas with a journalism degree, then he joined the Tyler Morning Telegraph newspaper. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served as a navigator on a bomber during World War II. He returned to journalism in July 1946, joining AP in Austin. Byers was with the international news organization until mid-1956. Byers then spent 27 years with the Houston Chronicle's Austin bureau, retiring in 1983. He covered stories ranging from the Texas Veterans Land Board scandal to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Byers returned to the University of Texas to obtain his master's degree in journalism, graduating in 1993. Byers married Mary Catherine Cowan in 1942. The couple had six children. She died in 2006. A funeral will be held June 2 in Austin, with burial at the Texas State Cemetery.
