Longtime 'O.C. Register' Horse Racing Writer, Dead at 67

By: The Associated Press Larry Bortstein, a veteran sports writer who specialized in horse racing during a career that lasted more than 40 years, has died. He was 67.

Mr. Bortstein died Sunday at Arcadia Methodist Hospital after suffering a pulmonary embolism Jan. 23, his family said in a release.

A New Yorker who moved to California to continue his career as a turf writer, Mr. Bortstein covered racing for the Orange County Register for 17 years.

"He was a consummate pro," Santa Anita Park publicity staffer Jack Disney said. "Larry was very passionate about racing and the people in it. He was always for the underdog."
