By: E&P Staff John Henry Holoman, former publisher of the defunct Herald Dispatch newspaper in Los Angeles, passed away Friday at age 70. The cause of death was not released.

Holoman, along with his wife Lucille, purchased the Herald Dispatch and its sister papers, the Firestone Park News and the Watts Star Review in 1982. Holoman originally bought the paper out of concern for the way in which African-Americans were portrayed in the mainstream media. Along with his wife, Holoman included his daughter, Stephanie in the running the papers' daily operations. The chain ceased publishing in 2007.

Born in Arkansas and raised in Kansas City, Holoman held various executive positions at Allstate, Reynolds Aluminum, and Home Savings. He is survived by his wife, two children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
