'Los Angeles Times' Gets New Sports Editor

By: E&P Staff Mike James has been named sports editor of the Los Angeles Times.

James, who has served as deputy sports editor for the past three years, is only the seventh sports editor at the L.A. Times since 1928.

James joined the newspaper in 1985 as an assistant sports editor for the Orange County edition. He became a news editor in 1989, and worked his way up to assistant sports editor and senior assistant sports editor. He left from 2000 to 2002, working first as coordinating producer for Foxsports.com, then as executive editor of Fox Sports Net.

James was named senior copy chief on his return to the L.A. Times and became deputy sports editor in April 2006.

"Mike has been instrumental in maintaining our award-winning Sports section in print while expanding its reach to the Web and beyond," Times Editor Russ Stanton wrote in a staff memo. "Mike has drawn on those experiences [in online and in television] in managing the ongoing transition of The Times? Sports section to a multimedia operation."
