Lotto Scam Subject of 'Baldo' Strip

Posted
By: E&P Staff "Baldo" cartoonists Hector Cantu and Carlos Castellanos, in a March 13-24 sequence of their comic, have teamed up with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) to warn readers about the so-called "Latin Lotto Scam."

Con artists typically approach a senior citizen with an alleged winning lottery ticket, claiming they can't collect their prize because of immigration issues and asking the victim to claim it for them. As a sign of "good faith," the victim is asked to give a security deposit. But once the money is given, the con artists disappear -- leaving behind a worthless lottery ticket. In the "Baldo" sequence, the great-aunt character of Tia Carmen is approached by scammers.

Cantu and Castellanos previously used "Baldo" to help the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project and to encourage the Dallas-Fort Worth Latino community to walk for health and the environment.

"Baldo" -- which is available in both English and Spanish -- appears in more than 200 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.

NCLR is a U.S.-based Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization.
