By: (AP) Louise Goodman Fletcher, a pioneer in Texas newspaper publishing, died earlier this week in this Panhandle town. She was 73.
Fletcher worked at The Pampa Daily News, renamed The Pampa News, for 44 years, retiring as publisher in 1994, when the paper was owned by Freedom Newspapers. She never studied journalism, said Dee Dee Laramore, the paper's editor.
"But she was a journalist's friend, I'll tell you," Laramore said.
Fletcher began as a secretary at the paper before being taking over as bookkeeper. She was publisher for 17 years.
Fletcher, who died Monday, was one of the first women publishers in Texas and the first for what is now Freedom Communications.
She was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Mangum, Okla., and married Ernest Fletcher on July 7, 1948.
She is survived by her husband, a son, her mother, three brothers and two grandchildren.
