By: Dexter Hill As in 2004, E&P will be charting every editorial endorsement for president, with just a handful recorded so far.
Today, The Lowell Sun was the latest newspaper to endorse presidential hopeful John McCain. The Massachusetts paper endorsed President Bush in 2004.
The endorsement cited McCain?s collaborations with Democrats in Congress as examples of the Republican presidential candidate putting his ?country first.? Particularly, the Sun praised his work with home state Sen. Ted Kennedy on a comprehensive immigration-reform bill and his partnership with Sen. Russell Feingold that won them each a Profile in Courage award.
The Sun also cited the ?3 a.m. phone ad? from Sen. Hillary Clinton?s primary campaign as reason to support McCain. "It asked, When the phone rings at 3 a.m. in the White House, who do you want to answer it?' We want President McCain picking up that phone,? the endorsement read.
The No. 1 issue, according to the editorial, is national security, and McCain has the experience to defend the nation.
