Lower Hudson, N.Y. 'Journal News' Associate Editor Dies

By: E&P Staff David Hartley, a 47-year newspaper veteran in the Lower Hudson Valley, N.Y., died on Friday from cancer. He was 68.

Hartley, a Yonkers, N.Y., native, spent his career writing for papers in and around his hometown. He worked as a news editor, city editor, deskman, and reporter for the Yonkers Herald Statesman from 1960-1972. After a brief stint as editor and general manager of the Tarrytown Daily News & Ossining Citizen Register, he returned to the Herald Statesman where he served as editor from 1973-1984.

He became associate editor of the opinion page at the Journal News in 1985 when the Herald Statesman was merged with other local Gannett-owned newspapers to create the Journal News. He retained that position until his death.

Hartley covered Yonkers with zealous writing on a variety of issues from education to international affairs. His editorials about court-ordered desegregation of housing and schools earned him awards. He also helped direct coverage of the capture of the ?Son of Sam? killer in Yonkers. In 1980, Hartley received a community service award from the Yonkers Council of Churches for ?Outstanding service to the citizens of Yonkers.?
