Lumpkin, Pioneer Female Sportswriter, Dies in Mississippi

By: Kathy Lumpkin, the first female member of the Alabama Sports Writers Association, died after a brief illness at the Rankin Medical Center in Brandon, Miss.

The association announced Lumpkin's death in a statement Saturday.

Lumpkin, who died Thursday night, worked as a sports writer for the Birmingham Post-Herald, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Alabama Journal, the Montgomery Advertiser and The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss. She covered the Alabama and Auburn beats for the Alabama newspapers. As assistant sports editor of The Clarion-Ledger, she wrote an NFL column.

She served on the ASWA's board of directors three times.

Lumpkin is survived by her parents, Bill and Peggy Lumpkin of Birmingham; one sister, Karen Kivertte of Acworth, Ga.; and two brothers, Bo Lumpkin of Sewanee, Ga., and Bill III of Daytona Beach, Fla.
