By: E&P Staff Ross Mackenzie will retire as the longtime editorial page editor of the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, effective Jan. 1. But he'll continue to write his column, which is syndicated by Tribune Media Services.
Mackenzie joined the Richmond News Leader in 1965. Four years later, he became that paper's editorial page editor. When the News Leader merged with the Times-Dispatch in 1992, he moved into the same position at the combined paper.
While Mackenzie was at the News Leader, Jeff MacNelly won two Pulitzer Prizes for editorial cartooning. Mackenzie, now 64, was a Pulitzer finalist for commentary in 1982.
A search for MacKenzie's successor will begin soon, according to a Times-Dispatch story, which noted that Mackenzie has written more than 20,000 editorials and columns during his career.
