'Mad' Magazine Legend and Newspaper Cartoonists Among NCS Winners

Posted
By: Dave Astor Several newspaper cartoonists won division prizes as Mad magazine cartoonist Al Jaffee took the top honor at this past weekend's National Cartoonists Society (NCS) gathering in New Orleans.

Jaffee received the Reuben Award as top cartoonist of the year. The other finalists had been Dave Coverly ("Speed Bump"/Creators Syndicate) and Dan Piraro ("Bizarro"/King Features Syndicate).

Among the 12 division winners were Jim Meddick ("Monty"/United Media) for best comic strip, Chad Carpenter ("Tundra/self-syndicated domestically/King internationally) for best comic panel, Bill Schorr (United) for best editorial cartoonist, and Sean Kelly for best newspaper illustration.

In this past Sunday's "Non Sequitur" comic, Wiley Miller of Universal Press Syndicate congratulated Jaffee for winning. As E&P reported last week, Miller did the comic well before the results were announced. But the NCS often gives the annual Reuben as sort of a lifetime-achievement award, and Jaffee has been a cartoonist much longer than Coverly and Piraro.

Also last week, Tom Toles of The Washington Post and Universal did a fold-in editorial cartoon reminiscent of Jaffee's famous fold-in feature in Mad.
