Madison 'Capital Times' Files Suit Against Gov. Jim Doyle

By: The Capital Times newspaper has filed a lawsuit against Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle over an open records issue.

The lawsuit filed Thursday in Dane County Circuit Court alleges that Doyle's office took too long to comply with a records request submitted June 4 for information about nine finalists for three judge openings.

Doyle fulfilled the request on July 8 just 90 minutes before he announced his picks for the openings.

The open records law requires requests to be fulfilled in a timely manner.

Capital Times editor Paul Fanlund says the governor's office clearly delayed releasing the records.

Doyle spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner calls the lawsuit "unnecessary chest thumping" that will cost taxpayers money.
