Major Kentucky and Tennessee Papers Make Format Changes

By: Kentucky's largest newspaper says it has reduced the size of some of its sections in print editions.

The Courier-Journal told readers in its print edition on Monday that it will no longer have a separate business section for Monday through Saturday editions. Business news will appear in the Metro section. On Tuesday through Saturday, there will be two pages dedicated to business news in the Metro.

Classified advertising sections have been dropped for the Monday and Tuesday editions, and the Features section "will be tightened." A new four-page "Weekend" section will replace Friday's "Extra" pullout section.

The front-page notice says the changes were to ensure the paper "remains healthy and able to continue serving this community for the long-term future."

The Courier-Journal is owned by Gannett Co. Another Gannett paper, The Tennessean, in Nashville, also announced changes on Monday.

The Tennessean format changes combine editions and eliminate daily television listings.

Editor Mark Silverman attributed the changes, which took effect Monday, to the recession.

The weekday local and business news sections have been combined into one section. The paper is also combining its Friday features and weekend sections and turning two Sunday features sections into one.

Although the daily television listings have ended, the newspaper is continuing weekly TV listings on Sundays.

The paper also reorganized its newsroom staff for its print and Web operations and named an editor to oversee efforts to involve readers in coverage.

Silverman said the paper had received responses from nearly 4,000 readers while it considered how to reformat the newspaper.

Other Gannett papers have made similar changes recently.
