By: Under court order, a man walked into the newsroom of the South Bend Tribune today and admitted lying to a reporter when he denied having sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl.
Fifty-six-year-old Michael Sheneman pleaded guilty on June 4th to fondling the girl but denied the charge in an interview with a Tribune reporter for a story two weeks later.
Last month, St. Joseph Superior Judge Jerome Frese told Sheneman that his conflicting stories had cast the criminal justice system in a bad light and ordered him to return to the newspaper to admit that he had lied.
Accompanied by his attorney, Timothy McLaughlin, Sheneman read a two-sentence statement to a Tribune reporter and editor today.
Sheneman is due to appear before Frese again next week.
