Man Behind Wal-Mart's Book-Burning Ad Quits

Posted
By: E&P Staff The publicity manager for Wal-Mart in Arizona and Southern California has resigned, two weeks after the retailer apologized for a newspaper advertisement featuring a photograph of a Nazi book-burning.

The ad appeared last month in the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff. It showed a picture of a Nazi book-burning and compared that sort of censorship to a local proposition that would limit expansion of Wal-Mart's supercenters.

Peter Kanelos, who was responsble for the ad, is leaving the company, but Wal-Mart's director of community affairs, Daphne Moore, would not say whether it was related to the ad.

The ad asked: "Should we let government tell us what we can read? Of course not. So why should we allow local government to limit where we shop?"

Kanelos said in an e-mail to Reuters that he submitted his resignation "about two weeks ago" and was leaving "on mutually agreeable terms."
