By: E&P Staff German press manufacturer MAN Roland has made a "Gold Partner" donation of $8,000 to the Graphic Communication Institute (GrCI) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Calling itself an "action-oriented think tank," the six-year-old GrCI promotes print media through research, testing, product evaluations, and consulting.

Susan Klutnick, MAN Roland sales manager for commercial web operations, serves on the advisory board of Cal Poly's Grahic Communication Department, and has contributed in the development of GrCI. Klutnick, former operations director of the Los Angeles Times' Olympic plant, said in a statement that "MAN Roland becoming a partner will make the institute stronger in its efforts to help printers succeed in a media marketplace that is growing more competitive and complex every day."

As part of the deal, MAN Roland will have access to GrCI's research results. For instance, the press manufacturer will distribute to customers and prospects three of the institute's white papers. The white papers are "Cross Media Communications," "Estimating for Digital Printing," and "Virtual Proofing."
