Man Sues 'Chicago Tribune' for Photo Linking Him to Mob

By: (AP) Frank Calabrese is used to seeing newspaper stories about the reputed mobster who shares his name, but when he opened the paper this week he was surprised to see his own photograph with a story about the organized crime figure.

An article in Tuesday's Chicago Tribune about the indictment of several mobsters -- including one named Frank Calabrese Sr. -- on charges of plotting at least 18 murders also featured a photograph of the retired Chicago businessman who has no ties to crime, organized or otherwise.

"It's just upsetting," said Calabrese, 76. "I have voice mails from people calling me who were my customers asking me what's happening. Is that you?"

"He was very, very upset," said his son, Louis. "People were questioning his reputation."

Calabrese filed a lawsuit against the paper in Cook County circuit court on Wednesday. The suit seeks unspecified damages for defamation and invasion of privacy.

Louis Calabrese said the Tribune apologized for the mistake and ran what he called "a retraction article," but his father remains upset.

The Tribune declined to comment beyond what was said in the correction and the article that appeared on the front page of Wednesday's Metro section, said spokeswoman Patty Wetli.

In the article, the Tribune explained it had a photograph of Frank Calabrese, who founded a small printing company, accepting an "Excellence in Manufacturing" award from Price Waterhouse in 1988.

"The newspaper erroneously used that photograph in its graphic describing Tuesday's mob indictment," the article read.
