By: E&P Staff The Denver Newspaper Agency ordered five MAN Roland Geoman presses to replace older Goss equipment used to print the jointly operated Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post.
The installation, an element in consolidating DNA's two plants, is to be completed in 25 months and include integration of MAN's Aurosys automated reel-handling.
MAN Roland also will manage "all major aspects of the project," including removal of old presses, management and crew training, and installation of a printnet networking and automation system intended to streamline the production workflow.
Among reasons for the choice cited by Senior Vice President of Operations Frank Dixon were "project management expertise" needed to fast-track consolidation of the plants.
Consolidation will phase out the Post's plant, in use since 1986. The News' plant, opened in 1992, will become the only production site by the end of 2007. Parts of both newspapers have been printed at both facilities since the JOA was formed in 2001.
The Geoman's variable web-width capabilities allow quick changeover between MediaNews' broadsheet Post and Scripps' tabloid Rocky Mountain News.
