'Mandrake the Magician' Movie Is Planned

By: E&P Staff A live-action "Mandrake the Magician" movie may start shooting later this year.

The "Mandrake" comic strip, syndicated by King Features, stars a magician who uses his powers of illusion and hypnotism to fight crime. Created in 1934 by Lee Falk (who also created "The Phantom" strip two years later), the strip is now done by Fred Fredericks.

Magician/illusionist Criss Angel, star of the "Mindfreak" TV show on A&E, is involved with the planned film version of the comic. The director is Chuck Russell ("The Mask").
