Markstein Wins U.N. Cartoon Award

Posted
By: E&P Staff Gary Markstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has won the $10,000 Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award from the United Nations Correspondents Association.

Markstein was cited for a July 2004 cartoon showing a lifeguard (the international community) ignoring a drowning victim (Sudan). He drew the lifeguard as "The Thinker" statue by Auguste Rodin.

Ironically, the Journal Sentinel last August reassigned Markstein to a job as a designer in the features department. But he still does editorial cartoons for syndication by Copley News Service.
