'Maui News' Union OKs New Contract Including Wage Cut, Other Concessions

By: Union employees of The Maui News have voted to accept a new three-year contract that includes a 10 percent wage cut and other concessions.

Hawaii Newspaper Guild administrative officer Wayne Cahill says union members understand the effects of a weak economy and are willing to provide relief to the newspaper's owners.

Publisher Joe Bradley says the relief is "very significant" for Maui Publishing Co.

The newspaper reported more than 90 percent of the members of three unions representing 99 workers approved the contract in Monday's ratification vote.

The pact calls for workers to pay 5 percent of their medical insurance premiums.

The company previously offered a fully paid medical insurance plan.
