McClatchy Launches Digital Editions on the Kindle

Posted
By: Jennifer Saba The McClatchy Co. announced Friday -- on Facebook -- that five of its papers are now available on the Kindle: The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram in Texas, the Anchorage (Alaska) Daily News and the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C.

Other McClatchy papers will be available soon, including The Kansas City Star and The Miami Herald.

The Kindle editions are free for a two-week trial. The monthly subscription price is $6.99 a month.

The editions are delivered wirelessly once a day in the early morning, but will not be a complete version of the print edition or even the Web site of each paper. The editions will not have advertising.

The Daily News and the Sacramento Bee editions launched on Oct. 19, with the others set to launch in mid-November.

McClatchy did not reveal the subscription revenue split between the company and Amazon, the latter of which is said to take a 70% cut of subscription revenue from newspapers.
