By: Jennifer Saba The McClatchy Co., which has signed on for distribution of the new Life magazine newspaper supplement, told E&P on Wednesday that it will carry the magazine in most if not all of its papers. Elaine Lintecum, a spokesperson for McClatchy, said that its newspapers (which include the Bees in California) that presently carry Parade and USA Weekend will continue to do so. She would not disclose terms of any of the deals.
Life is promised as a Friday supplement. Parade and USA Weekend generally appear on Sundays and Saturdays.
Time Inc. announced Wednesday that over 50 papers have agreed to distribute the once moribund Life magazine in their Friday editions. Knight Ridder and the Tribune Co. have also signed up for Life.
Both USA Weekend and Parade magazine told E&P that they welcome the addition of Life, despite possible competition for advertising. Publisher and CEO of USA Weekend Marcia Bullard said that Life's launch into the market will be a good thing. "It brings attention to the category which is very powerful and has a lot of clout in terms of advertising reach," she said. Parade President Randy Siegel echoed Bullard's sentiments: "We welcome them to the field."
USA Weekend runs in 600 papers and was founded in 1985. Parade runs in 330 newspapers and was launched 63 years ago -- "uninterrupted," Siegel added.
