By: E&P Staff The digital media division of McClatchy Co., the nation's second-largest newspaper chain, is planning to consolidate the bulk of its West Coast operations in its Raleigh, N.C., headquarters, according to a report in The News and Observer of Raleigh.

The division, McClatchy Interactive, grew in size when the company bought San Jose, Calif.-based newspaper chain Knight Ridder in June. As part of the deal, McClatchy acquired the acquired Knight Ridder Digital, the company's interactive media arm with approximately 200 staffers, and subsequently changed that division's name to McClatchy Interactive West. There are currently 140 employees at the dvision.

By putting all the employees in software development, computer programming and customer service employees under one roof, McClatchy is hoping to save money, the News and observer quoted Christian Hendricks, McClatchy's vice president of interactive and president of McClatchy Interactive, as saying. The consolidation will make it easier for the company to merge Web strategies and could also help McClatchy save on rent and wages.
