By: Staff Reports Company Beats Estimates By 2 Cents
The McClatchy Co. of Sacramento, Calif., reported second-quarter
earnings per share rose 12.7% to 55 cents on higher ad revenue,
especially at its California and Carolina papers. A consensus
estimate of analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial
called for 53 cents.
Revenue rose 4.7% to $286.4 million in the quarter, with ad
revenue up 5.9% to $233.6 million and circulation revenue down
1.1% to $43.3 million.
President and CEO Gary Pruitt said strong revenue growth helped
offset higher newsprint prices, although rising paper prices and
interest rates will continue to impact company results for the
rest of the year.
'Nonetheless, we believe revenue will continue to grow in the
mid-single digit range, and management will remain focused on
maintaining efficient operations and repaying our debt,' he said
in a statement.
McClatchy publishes 11 daily newspapers with a total daily
circulation of 1.4 million, including The Sacramento
(Calif.) Bee, The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., and
Minneapolis Star Tribune.
