McClatchy Up in April, Declares Dividend

By: E&P Staff The McClatchy Co. reported that newspaper advertising revenue for the month of April increased 2.6% compared to the same period last year. Total revenue grew 1.8%. Year-to-date, advertising revenue advanced 3.7% and total revenues were up 2.8%.

For the month of April, retail advertising grew 0.2%. National declined 10.7%, and classified was up 8.6%. Within the classified category, help wanted advanced 12.8%, real estate rose 21.1%, and auto dropped 4.5%.

By region, California advertising revenue increased 3%. It was down in Minneapolis 1.8%. The Carolinas and the Northwest were up 6.9% and 6.8% respectively.

Average paid daily circulation for April was down 0.4%. Sunday slipped 2.4%. Circulation for the community newspapers was up 1.2%.

Additionally, McClatchy declared a Q2 dividend of $.18 per share, an increase of 38.5% from the $.13 per share dividend in Q1 of 2005. The Q2 dividend is payable July 1 to stockholders of record on June 15, 2005.
