By: E&P Staff As part of the company-wide effort by The McClatchy Co., The Beaufort (S.C.) Gazette and The Island Packet in Bluffton, S.C., are cutting about 11% of their staffs and reducing employees' wages.

Publisher Sara Johnson Borton announced Tuesday that the two newspapers will cut 17 positions, eight of which currently are unfilled. Of those eliminated positions, eight are newsroom jobs.

By month's end, the two papers will cut salaried employees' pay by 5 to 10%. Hourly employees will see their work week cut back from 40 hours to 37.5 hours. Furloughs for all employees is another option management is considering.

The reductions are part of a broader effort by its corporate parent to shrink its work force by 1,600 full-time employees, by April.
