By: E&P Staff Media General is consolidating copy and page design functions at three of its metros, The Tampa (Fla.) Tribune, Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch and Winston-Salem (N.C) Journal expecting to save approximately $1 million annually.
The company is splitting copy desk and page design operations between two markets, Tampa and Richmond. A managing editor, yet to be appointed, will oversee the duties from Richmond.
Media General said this is the third grouping of papers to undergo this kind of consolidation. It maintains a center in Lynchburg, Va., and Hickory N.C. So far, the Richmond-based company has moved 12 of its 23 papers to shared copy and design desks and expects to have all its papers sharing those functions by the end of the year.
"Our consolidated editing and design operations allow our newsrooms to focus on strong local news reporting," Donna Reed, Media General vice president of content, said in a statement. "Stories will be edited once rather than multiple times."
Other newspapers companies like E.W. Scripps and Tribune have made similar moves consolidating copy and design desk by region.
