MediaNews To Use Waveshift's Community Tools

By: MediaNews Group Inc. of Denver has signed an agreement with Waveshift Inc. of Cameron Park, Calif., to use Waveshift's YourTown.Net and MyCalendar products.

A number of MediaNews newspapers were previously using KOZ.com for community publishing efforts, said Eric Grilly, vice president, interactive media. Based in Research Triangle, N.C., KOZ recently underwent a restructuring after being sold in bankruptcy court to a group of investors.

"At the announcement of their reorganization we decided to conduct an evaluation of other community publishing technologies and made the decision at that time to move to WaveShift," Grilly said. "We will be redeploying the community sections at each of our papers on the WaveShift platform this fall."

YourTown.Net lets newspapers set up sections for community groups and activities. MyCalendar is a personalized information manager tied to newspapers' local events calendars.

Grilly also reports another major initiative at MediaNews Group Interactive: the migration of its newspapers into a new publishing platform powered by Vignette. "Through Vignette, each publication will benefit from a set of core features and automated processes to reduce the cost and time it takes to create and maintain their site," he said.

The company's goal is to "leverage the Internet as a first-class business channel for reaching its online users anytime, anyplace, and through any device," Grilly added.

MediaNews papers include The Denver Post, Los Angeles Daily News, and The Salt Lake Tribune.

Privately held Waveshift also owns SportsHuddle. The company's investors include Gannett Co. Inc. and McClatchy.
