Matter, the National Magazine Award-winning online magazine unit of Medium, will be spun out as a nonfiction storytelling incubator under the name Matter Studios.
Evan Williams, the co-founder of Twitter and Blogger and chief executive of Medium, will serve as chairman and sole owner of the new enterprise, while husband-and-wife team Mark Lotto and Hillary Frey will be its co-creative officers. Mr. Lotto was editor-in-chief of Matter and head of editorial at Medium through March 14, and Ms. Frey was executive editor at Fusion through Friday. She will continue working on a contractual basis with Fusion on projects related to the 2016 election.
