MEI Sells K4 to UPenn's Daily

By: E&P Staff Managing Editor Inc., Jenkintown, Pa., an Adobe Systems portfolio company and software solutions provider, sold the K4 publishing system to the University of Pennsylvania's student newspaper. The Daily Pennsylvanian joins college papers, from Yale to UCLA, that use the editorial workflow software based on Adobe InDesign and InCopy.

Staffed by about 200 students and covering the university and surrounding Philadelphia metro area, the Daily Pennsylvanian circulates about 14,000 copies weekdays when classes are in session and publishes weekly during the summer.

Along with the daily, published since 1885, the staff also produces 34th Street magazine, The Weekly Pennsylvanian, The Summer Pennsylvanian, and the DailyPennsylvanian.com Web site. The 35-seat K4 system, which replaces a QPS installation, will produce all publications when it goes live this month.

General Manager Eric Jacobs said the DP has a long history of using a database-driven publishing system, but the staff had become dissatisfied with slow development of its existing software and students have shown increasing interest in learning to work with InDesign.

"Most important were the reports of smooth installation and solid reliability we received from existing K4 sites," Jacobs said in a statement. With staff turnover high at a college newspaper, Jacobs added, "It's crucial that our publishing system be easy for new students to learn ... and easy to administer."
