In a Web story, the Raleigh paper announced that Managing Editor John Drescher would became that paper's new executive editor. "There are few people who have the passion and commitment that he brings each day to our newspaper," Publisher Orage Quarles said.
"I always knew it was a possibility we could lose Mel [Silk] some day, or John for that matter," Quarles said in the story. "Now that day has come."
Quarles said Drescher would choose a new managing editor, and that no time frame for that had been discussed.
"Over the past five years Drescher has overseen coverage of some of The N&O's most challenging stories, including the Duke lacrosse false-rape allegations," the paper stated. "He takes over the helm of the region's dominant newspaper at a time when journalism is trying to redefine itself both in print and online."
