Memo Reveals Major Cuts in 'L.A. Times' Sports Section

Posted
By: E&P Staff In a richly detailed memo to his staff, Bill Dwyre, sports editor of the Los Angeles Times, has explained how he plans to meet the paper's goal of what he calls "a 14-page weekly reduction" in his section.

Among the casualties: The fish report and the daily soccer report.

Dwyre noted that he had already ordered a one-third slashing in prep coverage and trimmed baseball box scores. And God help him if they actually play pro hockey this year, he laments.

Among the many cuts:

-- Daily USC and UCLA football notes.

-- Daily insider coverage of Los Alamitos racing.

-- Saturday and Sunday TV listings in the Friday paper.

-- Daily soccer report

-- Friday page of NFL advance capsules.

-- Big Ten football box scores.

-- Separate stories on each NFL game in Monday's paper.

"For those persistent phone complaints that can't be satisfied and wish to assign blame, usually to the person who answered the phone, we have set up extension 75710 as the number to transfer those callers," Dwyre writes.
